Biography

Bostonian Erik Thorn came from a multilingual home and ranked in the top 2% in intelligence. After High School, he enlisted with the U.S. Army and rose in rank over a short period of time. He learned Dari, and became an Intelligence Officer, serving in Kabul as foreign reporters, adventurers, and criminals flocked to the city. Thorn was well known in the underground club circuit and even among locals as a proficient Buzkashi player.

Thorn was invited into the Unit as their regional specialist. Following selection, he remained in country gathering intel, building networks of allies and safe houses, and tracking hostiles. As the situation in Kabul worsened, Thorn kept tabs on Americans, rescuing them when necessary, and helping locals escape the violence. He was investigating a missing reporter when the Unit lost contact with him.

Detailed information on how to play Maverick R6 Siege operator

Utility

What is the utility?

In Rainbow Six Siege Maverick utility is Exothermic torch, which allows him to:
  • create openings in reinforced walls and hatches
  • destroy easily various defensive utilities
  • open unreinforced hatches in a speedy and silent manner
  • create holes in unreinforced walls & penetrable floors
ADVANTAGES
Advantages of torch versus other Hard breachers (Thermite & Hibana) are:
  • countering breach denial
Operators specialized in preventing breaching through reinforced surfaces (Bandit, Mute & Kaid) are unable to counter Maverick.
  • Low noise made while torching
Though still audible, using the torch to open holes in walls and hatches is significantly quieter than in the case of other hard breachers.
DISADVANTAGES
Disadvantages of Exothermic torch “SIRI” are:
  • melee range for breaching
Exposes Maverick to potentially being shot while in the process, especially in case of walls with easy runouts or Mira’s Mirror on it.
  • the time needed for creating sizable openings
Takes a longer time than for other Hard breachers to create a traversable opening.
  • limited breaching capability
Rainbow Six Siege Maverick has five fuel canisters. Breaching capacity depends heavily on your ability to use Torch efficiently. When appropriately used “SIRI” is a sufficient tool for opening four vaultable holes in walls or 2 hatches (challenging to achieve).
  • Weapon-Torch swap time
Ubisoft has increased swap time between weapon and torch in the Year 4 patch, which makes it more challenging to utilize the element of surprise for newly opened angles.
Due to the above characteristics, Maverick is mainly used as a murder hole creator from a hard breaching perspective or as breach support for both Hibana & Thermite, rather than the sole Hard breaching attacker.

How to use utility?

Decide on your priorities for the round.
How you should use your Torch for the round depends heavily on multiple factors, such as objective site, your and opposing team compositions, as well as the team’s plan of attack.

Here’s a list of your priorities and possible scenarios where it should be applicable:
  1. Breach support
This role means helping Thermite or Hibana to open reinforced surfaces by countering breach denial defensive utility.
You should focus on fulfilling such duty if:
  • your team lacks Thatcher or Twitch
  • the defense is actively Bandit tricking
  1. Hard breaching
You should mainly focus on creating traversal possibilities for your team in case you are the sole Hard breacher available for the round.
Further cases where this task is a priority are:
  • electrified hatch
Especially if you didn’t bring Thatcher and your team has no easy possibility to dispatch Kaid’s Rtilla.
    Example: Kitchen hatch in Clubhouse
  • possibility to rappel on an external wall

As Kantoraketti has shown during Six Invitationals 2019 in the below clip, Maverick can nullify the effect of reinforcements on walls by torching completely the top and bottom of a reinforced wall.

Such technique takes quite some time, but if done correctly allows the opening of an entire wall with Buck, or other Soft Breacher.
  1. Murder holes
If Rainbow Six Siege, Maverick is not needed for the above scenarios, then I highly recommend focussing on creating new sneaky angles on unsuspecting defenders.
This is especially useful for pushing defenders away from heavily fortified locations and forcing them to pay attention to additional angles.

Few tips to utilize Torch a bit better:
  • Use distractions to your advantage
The torch is significantly less audible than other Hard breaching utility, but defenders can still hear it!
The element of surprise is one of the most significant advantages you can have as Maverick. Think of ways to increase its potential.
Ask your teammate to make some noise, such as firing a gun or creating an explosion.
  • Don’t stand in front of the hole you’re creating
This is a recipe for being shot in the face in case defenders heard your torch.
Instead, torch the surface from an angle that does not expose you to the defender on the other side!
  • Create multiple little holes overlooking the opponent’s location
Defenders’ primary objective with reinforcing the site is to prevent certain angles from being available to attackers. By doing so, defenders limit the number of angles they have to watch actively or can be shot from.
Creating multiple new angles that the defender has to pay attention to increases drastically your chances of winning a gunfight.

  • Destroying Mira
Rainbow Six Siege Maverick can get an angle from below of the Mirror on the canister.
This is a risky technique and somewhat situational. If the player behind Mirror has a soft wall next to it or doorway, they can use it to shoot careless Maverick quickly.

  • Claymore trap
Open a hole at the bottom of the wall and place Claymore right in front of it.
Defenders may not expect such unusual claymore, especially in the heat of the battle.

Communicate with your team
Communication is the key to victory in the Rainbow Six Siege.
Before the action phase begins, tell your teammates what is your idea of attack and ask if they need your torch in any specific place or way.
Might sound like a small and trivial step, but early misunderstandings and unfulfilled expectations are the reason for most communication issues, not only in computer games.
Most of us fall into the trap of assuming others know what they should do and expect teammates to be aware of our plan. Bear in mind that different players have a different level of expertise in Siege, as well as various plans for an attack.

Interactions

SYNERGIES

Rainbow Six Siege Maverick can create holes for:
As a result, both operators strengths’ are complemented by giving them an unusual and potentially powerful angle.

Supports Hard breachers by possibly taking out breach denial utility.

Last, but not least, IQ can pinpoint defensive gadgets’ location to help Maverick with creating holes in specific areas. Especially useful when countering breach denial operator Kaid and his Electroclaw.

Counters:

In R6 Siege Maverick is a hard counter from a Hard breaching perspective to Breach denial operators:
For walls:
Both operators’ gadgets can be placed only on flat surfaces. Thus Maverick can predict its placement.
Kaid has significantly more freedom in his Electroclaw placement, making countering it by Maverick tricky.

For hatches:
  • Kaid
Maverick can destroy the hatch without taking out Kaid’s utility.

From a utility destruction perspective, “SIRI” counters the following defensive gadgets:
  • Evil Eyes
  • Bulletproof cameras
  • Deployable shields
  • Barbed wires

Countered by:

No defensive operator currently available in Rainbow Six Siege can counter Rainbow Six Siege Maverick Torch.

Maverick R6 Siege

Playstyle

Entry Fragger

Entry fraggers are a “tip of the spear,” thus being a force to penetrate through the initial line of defense and give attackers an edge.
Such a role assignment means Maverick will be the leading operator in hunting down roamers.
Hunting roamers minimizes risks of late-round flanks impacting your final objective push negatively.
Check our guide dedicated to roam clear to learn more.
BE DECISIVE!
As a fragger, you are expected to be decisive and not afraid to challenge defenders!
Furthermore, entry fraggers play a vital role in advancing attackers’ progress during the round in Siege. Progress is achieved by securing strategically essential locations, i.e., taking control of the room above the objective site, if the ceiling is covered with the destructible surface. Or being the first attacker to control areas frequently traversed by defenders to rotate to/from the objective.

ENTRY POINT CHOICE
Last but not least, entry fragger is more often than not the first attacker to push anchors hunkered down on the objective. I recommend that during the preparation phase in Rainbow Six Siege, you decide on your entry point depending on personal preferences defensive setup your team’s plan of attack.
Leaving your drone at your entry point will provide you with the right amount of initial intel. It is not uncommon for defenders to try to catch attackers off guard by setting up traps on entry points. You can neutralize the element of surprise for such a plan and prefire defenders (or avoid them) by knowing what they intend to do and where they are.

Maverick is good at fragging thanks to:
  • Three-speed
  • Good gun (M4)
  • Frag grenades
Please note that in case the team depends on Maverick’s utility for countering breach denial, then Maverick should play as a support operator until support duty has been completed.

Difficulty

Hard

  • The utility can be vital to the team’s success
  • more advanced than the usual mechanical difficulty of using utility
  • requires advanced map knowledge
  • benefits immensely from player’s creativity

Loadout suggestion

Loadout choices are an individual aspect, and rarely there is a “go-to” loadout in R6 Siege.
Sight choices are purely personal and depend on the player’s playstyle, map, even objective & specific role.
Please treat the below suggestion as what it is – our preferences.
We encourage you to experiment to find your setup.

Remember, just because something works for someone else, does not mean it has to and will work for you!

Why such loadout?

PRIMARY WEAPONS
Even though AR-15 is classified as AR, it is, in reality, a DMR.
As is the case with basically all operators with good AR and DMR choices, I recommend picking a full-auto option – M4 – in the case of the Maverick.
DMRs can be useful in the hands of a skilled player. However, in a game like Rainbow Six Siege where headshot means instant death, DMRs are at a significant disadvantage. They have a low rate of fire, which decreases the odds of getting a headshot on the opponent.

M4 is a very serviceable gun with good damage (44), an average rate of fire (750), and a controllable recoil pattern.
Vertical muzzle climb is a bit more disturbing for me than horizontal recoil, thus recommendation to pick flash hider.
When it comes to grip attachments, I suggest picking a vertical grip as M4 has too much recoil without it to hit shots reliably.
Some players may prefer 1x sights when utilizing murder holes. However, 1.5x scope added in the Y5S3 patch hits the sweet spot between magnification and 1x sights. Thus we recommend picking it up for Maverick as it is the highest magnification option available for M4 anyway.

SECONDARY WEAPONS
In Rainbow Six Siege, Maverick has access to only one secondary weapon – TACOPS. I would recommend equipping the Muzzle brake to lower recoil on your pistol.

UNIVERSAL GADGETS
Now let’s talk about universal gadget choices.
Maverick’s torch can synergize well with claymores. It allows making unpredictable traps on reinforced walls, which may be overlooked in the heat of the battle.
Additionally, “SIRI” puts Maverick at risk due to a short range of the gadget and the time needed for creating sizable holes in reinforcements. When equipped with Torch, Maverick is heavily exposed to runouts, and this is where Claymores can come in extremely handy.

However, Frag grenades are such a great tool at dealing with fortified defenders and destroying defensive utility that they take priority here.
