Offensive operator

Glaz R6 operator, once an OP attacker who could perform all actions, including entry fragging, objective pushing, and disruption of the defenders’ actions.

Detailed information on how to play Glaz R6 Siege operator

Utility

What is the utility?

In Rainbow Six Siege Glaz has access to unique HDS Flip Sight.

While aiming down sight with flip sight equipped, Glaz can see a yellow outline for defenders in his line of sight even through the smoke.

His utility makes Glaz the only attacking operator who can see through the smoke in Rainbow Six Siege.
In Year 4, Ubisoft made significant changes to Glaz’s utility.
Glaz has now 5 levels of “banana vision,” with 0 being just normal vision and 5 full yellow outlines.
To increase the thermal vision level, Glaz needs to stand still.
When moving or rotating, Glaz gradually loses the ability to outline defenders. The time needed to lose yellow outlines entirely is 12 seconds (before the Y5S3.3 patch was 6 seconds).

That change intends to make him more of angle watching and sniping attacker, rather than an objective pusher who is invincible in smoke cover.

How to use utility?

Due to his characteristics and nature of his utility, Rainbow Six Siege Glaz shines mainly in the following circumstances:
  • long-range engagements
Banana vision makes it easier to spot the enemy and gives Glaz advantage in long-range engagements as he can spot enemies even in very tight spots, where only pixel(s) are visible
  • when smoke obscures the view
Glaz is an excellent operator to provide cover when smoke grenades or smoke bolts (of Capitao) are active.
Bear in mind that the enemy team that knows attackers have Glaz in their ranks may avoid peeking for the duration of the smoke.
Often, in such cases, defenders try to utilize C4 explosives by throwing them in smoke to kill aggressive Glaz players and prevent potential defuser plant.

I recommend Glaz R6 operator players to be decisive in positioning themselves during smoke cover, but be wary of the risks.

To minimize the risk of being punished for overly aggressive plays as Glaz, I suggest keeping below questions in mind:
  • How many C4s defenders have potentially left?
If you know that defenders have Mira, Valkyrie, and Pulse, then you can expect C4 flying to your direction when first smoke is being used.
  • How many smokes sets attackers have?
Your options for utilizing smoke are limited if you, as Glaz, are the only operator with the possibility to smoke.
However, if your team has 4 or 6 smokes available, then I recommend throwing first one relatively early in the round and do not push aggressively, nor try to plant defuser in common spots.
The first set can be used as “baiting” for defenders C4s or enemies trying to deny attackers with aggressive push.

Thanks to the ability to see through smoke, Glaz has broader options for using smoke grenades than most attackers. He can use it by throwing smokes:
  • at defenders location
  • between attacking team and defenders position
  • at himself

The first two options are rather usual ways to utilize smokes as its more beneficial to obscure defenders’ vision rather than yours or to limit certain angles between both squads.
Throwing smoke closer to your location is a bit more situational and risky option.

Why risky?
When smoke is closer to your location, it makes it easier for defenders to either blindly fire at you or to determine where to throw explosives at.
When smoke is closer to the defenders’ location, it obscures their vision more than yours.

Why would you throw smoke at yourself then?
Normally throwing smoke at yourself would hinder your vision considerably. However, as Glaz can see through it, such usage can give him more choices for angles to watch.

As mentioned earlier, Glaz is a fantastic choice for late-round phases when the attacking team is ready to focus on the objective.
During the defuser plant, Glaz and smoke play a critical role in the attacking team’s success.
A common tactic for planting a defuser is to throw smokes between attacking squad and defenders.

Such usage of smoke limits vision for defenders, making it easier for attackers to plant the defuser and avoid being either shot down or blown by explosives.
Due to frequent usage of this tactic, Glaz is a perfect operator to cover planting teammate.
Covering the planter means watching angles from which defenders are expected to peek or come from.

Interactions

SYNERGIES

  • The strongest synergy for Glaz comes from Smoke bolt utilization. Glaz is the only operator who can see through Capitão’s smoke (as well as any other smoke).
Capitão is the most reliable smoke option as his bolts are more accurate than default smoke grenades and not countered by Jager’s ADS.

  • Operators with Smoke grenades, such as:

Counters:

Plant denial and overly aggressive defenders when smoke is active.

Countered by:

  • Rainbow Six Siege Glaz is unable to shoot through Castle’s Armored Barricades

  • Smoke

Situational counter. Smoke can throw his gas canisters where attackers can potentially be during the smoke duration. Such usage does not hinder Glaz’s ability to see through smoke but instead denies the push or defuser plant in the impacted area.

  • Nitro cell

Especially dangerous to Glaz players as in right setup defenders may avoid being exposed to his line of sight, yet be able to throw C4 at him.

  • Warden
Year 4 addition to the defensive roster in Rainbow Six Siege, Warden is capable of seeing through smoke, just like Glaz.

How to play -
Glaz R6 Siege

Playstyle

ANGLE-WATCHER

Glaz is an attacking operator with medium armor and speed ratings, who is the sniper of Rainbow Six Siege.

Thanks to Glaz’s utility of being able to see through smoke, Glaz is played as a typical sniper class, being far from the action and waiting for the unexpecting defender to cross his line of sight.
I suggest using him in such a way at the beginning of the round by holding frequently utilized rotation spots for defenders until your entry fragging teammates clear roamers and your Hard breachers open angles to the objective site.
During this phase, Rainbow Six Siege Glaz should be angle watcher, especially in areas where long-range engagements are available.

I recommend leaving an entry fragging role to operators more adept at close range encounters.
He is most effective when utilizing smoke grenades, which should be reserved for pushing the objective site in later stages of the round.
Operators such as Ash, Zofia, or Sledge are better suited in clearing roamers and gaining control over the map.

Difficulty

HARD

  • The utility requires Glaz R6 operator player to position himself well
  • To be effective Glaz has to make his shots count – good aim recommended
  • Non-vital utility but may support significantly planting a defuser

Loadout suggestion

Loadout choices are an individual aspect, and rarely there is a “go-to” loadout in R6 Siege.
Sight choices are purely personal and depend on the player’s playstyle, map, even objective & specific role.
Please treat the below suggestion as what it is – our preferences.
We encourage you to experiment to find your setup.

Remember, just because something works for someone else, does not mean it has to and will work for you!

Suggested loadout:

Why such loadout?

PRIMARY WEAPONS
Loadout options do not vary much when it comes to playing as a Rainbow Six Siege Glaz.
He has access to only one primary weapon, for which sight options are as always personal. We recommend using either Reflex or Red dot as Russian holographic sight is odd with no exact middle pointer spot indicated by it.
For barrel, I suggest muzzle brake as for every other DMR weapon. Muzzle brake lowers recoil on the first shot, which is the only shot type you will take with this type of weapon.
In case you want to conceal your presence, you can choose suppressor. This barrel makes it harder to distinguish Glaz being played by attackers, but his OTs-03 still makes a specific sound that can be recognized by opponents.

SECONDARY WEAPONS
Glaz R6 operator has access to PMM as a secondary weapon which is considered as one of the best pistols in the game.
PMM has a smaller size of the magazine but compensates with a great Time to Kill (ttk), with very low recoil. Additionally, it’s iron sight gives excellent clarity of view. PMM will be used primarily by Glaz in close-quarter combat situations. Thus muzzle brake is the barrel to go here, as well.

UNIVERSAL GADGETS
From universal gadgets perspective, smoke grenades are a no-brainer. In Year 4 Ubisoft gave Glaz access to frag grenades, but we do not recommend such an option for a sniper. He is still best suited with Smoke grenades to utilize his scope the most.
