Biography

Apha Tawanroong was born in Ta Phyraya, growing up along the Thai-Khmer border. During her childhood, her little sister had accidently detonated an unexploded land mine while playing with it, which resulted in her death. Devastated by her loss, Tawanroong dedicated her life to helping others affected by unexploded ordnances.

As a private detective, her discovery of a bomb plot in Bangkok brought Tawanroong to the attention of the Royal Thai Police (RTP). Her knack for connecting the dots between seemingly-unrelated incidents earned her grudging respect from Thailand’s male-dominated law enforcement agencies, as well as hostility from numerous criminal syndicates. The RTP offered Tawanroong a Detective position with the Crime Suppression Division, where she dismantled a human trafficking ring and foiled no fewer than four bomb plots. Her ability to track and connect diverse shipments of explosive materials was lauded by her superiors, though she did have a tendency to bend the rules in favor of expedience which resulted in a number of minor infractions.

Unfortunately, her police career ended when she was nearly killed during an operation in Bangkok with Jordan “Thermite” Trace. The pair had been tracking down a weapons racket when a bomb had been discovered. Transporting the bomb in a pick-up truck through the streets of Bangkok, Trace attempted to defuse it. He ultimately failed when the truck suffered a head-on collision. As a result of the accident and explosion, Tawanroong lost her left arm and leg while Trace only suffered third-degree burns to his hands and arms. Despite this, she would fully recover from her injuries, and later returned to work as a private detective.

In late 2020, Tawanroong was approached by Jaimini “Kali” Shah who offered her a position to join NIGHTHAVEN. She accepted Kali’s offer due to the prospect of gaining access to cutting-edge prosthetics as well as donating her pay to charities. Through NIGHTHAVEN’s current agreement with Rainbow, she subsequently became a Rainbow operative. While training at the Stadium, she met up with Trace. She told him that the incident in Bangkok was not his fault and that she never blamed him for her injuries.

Detailed information on how to play Aruni

Utility

What is Aruni utility?

Aruni R6
The unique utility of Aruni are Surya Laser Gates. As the name suggests, Surya’s are 3 laser gates that can be put on entry points or destructible surfaces.

What is the role of Surya?

Aruni’s laser gates fill in a role of area denial, sharing similarities with Castle of focusing on burning the attackers’ utility.
Therefore, your primary goal with Surya is to force enemies to either:
  • spend their limited resources on dealing with laser gates
  • get damaged while passing the gate
  • choose another route

Surya characteristics:

  • 3 gates available to Aruni
  • Can be deployed on destructible walls, doorways, windows & hatches
  • Aruni (and only her) can pick up deployed Surya to use it elsewhere
  • Gates have no duration, nor can they be destroyed
  • Can be temporarily disabled for 30 seconds, after which the gate has to be reactivated by defenders (not only Aruni)
  • Destroy attacking gadgets that touch the gate, such as drones or projectiles
  • Deal 30 damage to attackers who pass through the gate, regardless of the armor rating of the operator
  • When deployed on the doorways, the gate has a gap on the bottom which allows drones to pass through it
  • No gap is available when Surya is deployed on other surfaces
  • Deactivates when a friendly player is within close proximity, allowing teammates to pass by unscathed
  • Friendly gadgets (impacts, c4, etc) are treated similarly to attacking gadgets – destroyed plus deactivating the gate

Enhanced melee attack:

An additional utility that comes with Aruni is her enhanced robotic arm. The augmented arm allows Aruni to punch holes similar to shotgun blasts. On top of that Aruni is capable of opening unreinforced hatches with a single punch.
As a result, Aruni can fill in map remodeling duties to create rotations between rooms or kill holes. Please note, however, that it takes a bit more time than using a shotgun or an impact grenade. The upside is that melee attacks are infinite.

How to use utility?

PLACEMENT OF SURYA
When deciding on the placement of Surya gates, ask yourself the following questions:
  • Which entry points or areas are we vulnerable to?
  • Where are enemies likely to come from?

The way we like to position our laser gates is to use them on objectives with strong window positions, such as:
  • Clubhouse map, CCTV window
  • Coastline map, kitchen window

Additionally, double walls that are extremely common push direction for attackers are great for creating an additional layer of defense.
Thus, we tend to place Surya on walls of:
  • Chalet map, snowmobile external walls
  • Clubhouse map, CCTV external walls
Of course, such placement won’t be likely to completely stop enemies from utilizing those walls. They may, however, be very painful to deal with, especially if it took a lot of utility and time for the attackers to even open the reinforced wall.

So here is my example setup on Coastline, kitchen objective:
Such a setup creates two layers of utility to deal with on the “blue”/”sunrise” side of the kitchen, which will buy us time or waste attackers’ utility. On top of that, it will give us a heads up before the push comes from this side of the map. And finally, once the push is on, we will have potential visual information of the situation thanks to the camera. You can make the setup stronger by having a defender playing in the “blue bar” and placing barber wire in the kitchen doorway, as well as at the kitchen window.

SURYA GATE IS NOT A BARRICADE

From what we can see, a quite frequent mistake that defensive teams commit is treating Surya gates as Castle barricades.
Both utilities are similar in a way, but they work differently from the perspective of obstructing the view and entry. Just because you got lasers on a window, does not mean enemies cannot hop over it or shoot you from it, surprising you in the process.
Instead, you want to treat Surya more as a:
  • Heads-up tool for predicting the timing of a push
Since the gate can be reactivated after 30 seconds, attackers tend to wait with deactivation until they are ready to push. Thus deactivation of a gate should sound an alarm for an incoming attack on the objective
  • Delay & utility burning tool
Just like the Castle’s armored panels, Surya delay enemies’ push by forcing them to deal with it first or being damaged. Enemies have a limited amount of devices that can be used for deactivating gates. It may seem like a little benefit, but reducing the number of drones or grenades available to enemies can play a big role, especially towards the end of the round

SURYA GET BETTER CLOSER TO ROUND END

Speaking about the end of the round, Aruni’s gadgets’ importance increases exponentially as time runs. In a way, Surya works similarly to Castle or Smoke’s gas canisters as it becomes more of a problem as attackers die or start running out of both utility and time.

Think about it this way: One less drone at the start of a round is not a huge deal, right?
The attacker has probably the 2nd drone left anyway. And if not, then one of his buddies can drone for him.
That one drone becomes much more important in the last 30 seconds of the round with only 1/2 attackers left. Perhaps that’s their last drone and they have to use it to deal with your laser gate?
Now they have to execute a late-round push without intel about your presence on the site.

Interactions

SYNERGIES

  • Maestro’s Evil Eye
Maestro can re-activate the Surya gate by using Evil Eye’s zap for that purpose
  • Castle’s Armored Panel
Adds a protection layer to Surya, can be an overkill
On top of those specific synergies, Aruni’s laser gates can aid any utility that attackers try to deal with, which is behind the entry point that Surya secures.
In such a synergy, we can think of Surya more as a Wamai’s MAG-nets or Jager’s ADS.

Counters:

Aruni is not a counter to any specific attacker in the game. Instead, she focuses on reducing the number of gadgets and drones available at attackers’ disposal.

Countered by:

The biggest counter to Surya laser gates are projectiles at the disposal of attackers:
  • Stun grenades
  • Smoke grenades
  • Frag grenades
Furthermore, operators with projectile-based gadgets have more utility to deal with Surya. Such commonly picked operators are:
Lastly, attackers can simply use drones to deal with the lasers.

Playstyle

UNIVERSAL

Despite Ubisoft classifying Aruni as an Anchor, we recommend treating her as a flexible defender. She can be useful on the objective, and we can understand why the would developer perceive her as an anchor – she is the only defender who can pick up the Surya and place them elsewhere. However, the number of times that you decide to do so during the round is really not that high.

As a result, Rainbow Six Siege Aruni is a universal operator who can be played as either anchor or roamer.
Roaming is leaving the objective site to disturb and flank attackers.
Anchoring, on the other hand, means staying on the objective or in a location with eyesight to the objective.

To learn more about each defensive role, please visit the below sections.
Both her statistics and loadout can work very well as a roamer and an anchor.
Aruni’s speed is medium so she is not particularly hindered in either role nor does she excel at one.
From the loadout perspective, Aruni offers a very good P10 Roni, and a good primary weapon is often what makes an operator a good roamer candidate (look at Jager).
Lastly, but definitely not least, we have the enhanced punch that aids Aruni in creating quick escape routes by opening hatches.

So in case you decide to play as a roamer, here is the main tip we have for Aruni:
Make sure you finish helping with the setup on the site before leaving the objective.
Your team might need your punch for rotations, and you should leave your universal gadget of choice (Barbed wire and Bulletproof camera) on the site, too.

Loadout suggestion

Loadout choices are an individual aspect, and rarely there is a “go-to” loadout in R6 Siege.
Sight choices are purely personal and depend on the player’s playstyle, map, even objective & specific role.
Please treat the below suggestion as what it is – our preferences.
We encourage you to experiment to find your setup.

Remember, just because something works for someone else, does not mean it has to and will work for you!

Why such loadout?

PRIMARY WEAPONS

Since the alternative to P10 RONI is only a DMR weapon, we have not much of a debate in terms of primary weapon choice.
DMRs tend to be considered inferior guns since their rate of fire is by design low. This is a big disadvantage especially due to Rainbow Six Siege being a game where 1 shot to the head results in death.
So do yourself a favor and pick P10 Roni.

Now speaking about our weapon of choice, it is a beast of a gun.
The primary downside of P10 is its low damage per bullet and small magazine size.
But the upside of the gun is substantial – P10 Roni is a headshot machine due to its almost non-existent recoil and high rate of fire.

Many professional players like to use an extended barrel on that gun, but we would suggest trying out first learning the gun with flash hider and then experiment with an extended barrel – it reduces the damage drop-off on long distances.
We would suggest using a vertical grip with an extended barrel.

If you, however, decide to go with a flash hider for lowering the recoil, then you may benefit from equipping the gun with an angled grip.
Angled grip reduces the time needed to aim down sight, which is helpful when turning a corner and running into an enemy, or peeked unexpectedly.

Holo is our sight of choice since P10 RONI has the alternative variant of Razor holographic sight. This holo version is one of our favorites!

SECONDARY WEAPONS

PRB92 is the only secondary gun we can equip.
As is the case with most pistols, we recommend using it with a muzzle brake to ease the control of the recoil in a gunfight.

UNIVERSAL GADGETS

Both universal gadgets can serve Aruni, and her team, very well.

The main recommendation here is to check your team’s composition and decide on your universal gadget based on team needs, as well as your preferred playstyle.
Barbed wires are always a good option since you cannot really have too much of them.
If you place a wire in the choke point or entry point, you are adding an additional layer to your defense.

The bulletproof camera may be beneficial for specific spots or in case your team is lacking intel-gathering defenders (Echo, Maestro, or Valkyrie).

As a general rule of thumb, we recommend picking barbed wire if you have no plan where to place your camera.
