GOYO

Defensive operator

Goyo is one of the most interesting defenders in terms of impact on the game.
For the non-competitive side of the Rainbow Six Siege community, Goyo has been rather a niche operator.
However, ESL Pro League has been using him extensively.

Goyo fills in the roles of primarily area denial defender & utility burn, with a potential of plant denial.
On top of that, he has access to two very strong primary weapons.

Biography

César Ruiz Hernández was eleven years old when a bomb destroyed his home, killing his father and sister and severely injuring his mother. With the help of Specialist Azucena Rocío “Amaru” Quispe, César’s mother Sofia taught him to observe his surroundings, and to avoid the other boys his age who had been drawn into gang-related affairs. She encouraged him to enroll at the Heroic Naval Military School, where he graduated as a teniente de corbeta. He joined the Naval Infantry, then the Amphibious Commando Battalion, participating extensively in anti-smuggling operations and several high-profile arrests. Becoming a member of the Fuerzas Especiales introduced him to the reality that drugs were no longer the primary source of income for the cartels. He began working with UNESCO and INTERPOL to combat antiquities trafficking, where he gained the attention of Rainbow as a mind with a keen tactical sense and exceptional forward-thinking.

Detailed information on how to play Goyo R6 Siege operator

Utility

What is the utility?

Goyo brings 2 Volcan Shields to the table. Volcan Shields are enhanced deployable shields. The enhancement of shields are canisters attached to them.
Volcan shields are an interesting addition to R6 Siege gadgets. Goyo’s shields synergize well with other operators. Thus, the benefits of Volcan shields increases exponentially with the teamwork and cohesion of the defensive team.
As a result, Goyo’s effectiveness is rather insignificant in low ranks or uncoordinated teams. On the other hand, the availability of Goyo together with Wamai in the pro scene became one of the main reasons ESL Pro League developed 20 seconds META.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF VOLCAN SHIELDS?

Goyo’s Volcan shields have the following major roles in defensive strategy, namely:
  • area denial
  • plant denial
  • utility dump
As an area denial device, Volcan shields are able to delay attackers’ push from a certain location. Such a delay is achieved by prompting attackers to either:
  • deal with the shield before pushing
  • change the route to avoid the shield
  • push regardless
From a plant denial perspective, the Volcan shield can act similarly to Smoke’s Gas canister, with the main difference that Goyo has to predict the plant attempt location beforehand.
This is primarily useful for countering plants at default spots (common locations used by attackers to plant the defuser).

Last but not least, Volcan shields are often used to force attackers into wasting their utility on the shield – such action is commonly called “burning” utility. The number of projectiles that deal with shields and defensive utility, in general, is limited. Projectiles used on the Volcan shield could have been used to destroy Maestro’s Evil eye or “burn” Jager ADS devices elsewhere.

CHARACTERISTICS OF VOLCAN SHIELD:

  • From the front Volcan shield looks just like the default deployable shield
  • Though, if you look carefully through glass shield parts, you can see the frame of the canister sticking out
  • Goyo’s shield is not more durable than default deployable shields
  • Whatever destroys deployable shields works also on Volcans
  • Canister explodes regardless of the method used to dispatch the shield
  • Upon detonation canister releases fire, similar to Capitao’s firebolts
  • The initial explosion deals 34 damage to nearby 2-speed operators and destroys gadgets within its radius – both friendly and attackers’ utility. Explosion damage radius is ~3 meters from the shield
  • Fire burns for ~12 seconds and deals 12 hp with each tick. The radius of fire is ~4 meters
  • Damage is dealt to attackers and defenders – remember: friendly fire is on!

How to use utility?

In this section of the Goyo guide, we will discuss potential thought process when deciding on placing Volcan shields.
There are a few points to consider:

SHIELDS CAN BACKFIRE!

First, shields can backfire if placed wrongly.
Unlike default deployable shields, Goyo should definitely avoid placing Volcan shields in strong anchoring locations.
There’s no worse feeling as a Goyo player than causing your teammate’s death due to piss poor Goyo Volcan shield placement.
Thus, having experience with the default setup of a defensive team and anchoring positions is highly beneficial for playing Goyo. Even further, Goyo is best used with a premade squad, with which you have an understanding of roles and positions.
Therefore, Goyo is similar to Castle in terms of not being recommended to new players!

THINK ABOUT PLACEMENT IN ADVANCE!

Moving on, as Goyo, we have to think in advance about expected attacking routes to the objective.
Attacking teams tend to push in similar fashions, by trying to secure certain rooms before pushing the objective. Understanding such trends can be a very important step in deciding where to place your shields. This is especially useful when attempting to defend the same objective for the second time – use your experience from the previous round to counter the enemy’s favorite approach to the objective.

USE CHOKE POINTS

Consider placing shields in choke points. Chokepoints are tight/narrow passages that leave little room for maneuvering.
Examples of such locations are tight corridors, objective entrances, or small rooms.
Remember that the fire radius is only up to ~4 meters from the Volcan shield!

WHICH SHIELD ANGLE IS GOOD FOR US AND BAD FOR THEM?

Another important aspect to think about is the angle necessary for shooting the canister.
This point should be considered from two perspectives:
  • Are defenders able to destroy canister easily?
Optimally, you want defenders to be able to shoot canister from cover, without exposing to the enemy’s fire.
  • How accessible is the Volcan shield’s canister to attackers?
There’s not much sense placing Goyo’s R6 Siege Volcan shield with canister facing attackers – this is pretty obvious. Furthermore, go a bit further with this thought. Think about angles that the attacking squad is likely to establish to make it as hard as possible for them to detonate shield without using utility other than a bullet.
MAXIMIZE BURNING ATTACKERS’ UTILITY!
More specifically, try to synergize with Jager’s ADS and Wamai’s Mag-nets to force attackers to spend as much utility as possible on dealing with your Volcan shield.
This point alone can make a difference between an average Volcan shield placement and a top-tier one.
Having a shield on its own can burn a single frag grenade, a breaching round, or Zofia’s Impact grenade.
However, placing a Volcan shield with Jager’s ADS nearby and Wamai’s Mag-net can result in attackers losing the first explosive due to potential lack of awareness of ADS/Magnet, and then having to waste stun grenades, smokes, or other non-explosive projectiles.

Example:
The utility spent without synergy: 1 explosive
The utility spent including synergy with 1 ADS: 1-2 explosives, 2-3 non-explosives
Can you see how much more effective such an approach is?

PROTECT DEFAULT PLANT SPOTS

Knowing where attackers are likely to plant is a huge benefit when playing Goyo.
Most sites have a default spot, which is a location within the bomb site that tends to be used by attackers for planting a defuser. Such a location is usually close to an external entrance to the objective.
As a Goyo R6 Siege defender who specializes in plant denial, you should pre-place your shield in such a location.
Below you can see an example of placement focused on potential plant denial on Garage of Consulate:
An additional note on plant denial:
Unlike Smoke, you have less flexibility during the round in terms of adaptation to attackers’ actions. Smoke can wait to see where attackers are planning to come from, while Goyo cannot adapt too much.
There is an upside to such a nature of utility on the Goyo side, too.
Goyo does not have to stay alive to possibly prevent a plant. Any defender can activate Volcan shields at the end of the round. The same cannot be said about Smoke because he has to be alive to use his utility.

COMMUNICATION HELPS

This tip in our Goyo R6 guide is relevant for any operator in Rainbow Six Siege, but in the case of operators specializing in area denials such as Castle, Smoke, Mira and now also Goyo, the impact on communication and teamwork goes beyond the usual benefits. Without communication with your teammates, you may miss out on synergies between Volcan shields and other defenders’ gadgets.
If unsure about the placement or strategy of your team, simply ask them whether you should place the shield in a specific spot.
And speaking of synergies, let’s move to the interactions aspect of the Goyo utility guide.

Interactions

SYNERGIES

  • Jager ADS & Wamai Mag-nets

As mentioned earlier, both gadgets can enhance the ability of the Goyo to “burn” attackers’ utility.

To do so, projectile intercepting defensive utility should be placed nearby Goyo’s shield. Just be wary of placing Mag-nets catching and detonating intercepted projectiles – they can cause shields explosion if placed too close.

  • Maestro Evil Eye

The evil eye is capable of detonating the Volcan shield by shooting a laser at the canister. Placing Evil Eye behind the shield allows remote detonation, for the least exposure of defenders needed. Again, remember not to place it too close, else Evil Eye gets destroyed during detonation.

  • Kapkan EDD

If the Volcan shield is placed in a doorway, then Kapkan can place his EDD trap on the same door. In such a case, attackers who vault over the shield will automatically trigger the Kapkan trap leading to inevitable death.

  • Melusi Banshee
Both operators’ gadgets can be placed in close proximity to increase odds of potentially killing attackers with Volcan shield

Counters:

Goyo is not a counter to any specific utility or role on the attacking side. Instead, Goyo counters the following scenarios:
  • Late round pushes

Goyo’s shields gain importance over time, similarly to Smoke’s gas canisters. Delaying 12 seconds with 1:30 left on the clock doesn’t make much of a difference to attackers. However, the same delay with 25 seconds on the clock is a significant drawback for the offensive squad!

  • Attacking rosters without explosive projectiles

One of Goyo’s utility roles is to force attackers into spending their limited utility. Thus, attacking a roster without many projectile gadgets can be heavily penalized when facing Goyo. Such projectiles include:

Countered by:

The following utility destroys Goyo’s Volcan shields safely:
There are also other operators who can destroy the shield, but due to the nature of their utility, they are bound to be harmed while doing so:

How to play -
GOYO R6 Siege

Playstyle

UNIVERSAL

Goyo is one of the most versatile defenders when it comes to playstyle. He has access to the powerful weapon on the long-range – ACOG DMR (disguised as a shotgun) – as well as close to mid-range shredding machine – Vector.45.
On top of that, Goyo is a 2 speed and 2 armor operator, which gives him flexibility in performing either roaming or anchoring tasks.
If that wasn’t enough for versatility, Goyo’s utility can be pre-placed, meaning that he can place shields at the start of the round on the objective, without the need to be there for utilizing shields.
Universal operators can be called jacks-of-all-trades due to the ability to perform both tasks (roaming or anchoring) but not exceeding in either of them. As a universal operator you will be more adaptable than others, thus being able to shift role mid-round swiftly in case the situation requires you to do so.
We suggest performing a role that is needed by your team, and you feel comfortable with it.

Roaming is leaving the objective site to disturb and flank attackers.
Anchoring, on the other hand, means staying on the objective or in a location with eyesight to the objective.

Difficulty

MEDIUM

Placing Goyo’s Volcan shields is not hard. What is hard is:
  • knowing where to place them to bring benefit – requires map knowledge and game sense
  • understanding team’s defensive plan – needs teamwork, experience, and cooperation

Since Volcan shields can be activated by other operators, Goyo is not the only one to have responsibility for the detonation of the shields. Therefore, his rating is not hard unlike Smoke’s who has to stay alive to have a significant impact on the round.

Loadout suggestion

Loadout choices are an individual aspect, and rarely there is a “go-to” loadout in R6 Siege.
Sight choices are purely personal and depend on the player’s playstyle, map, even objective & specific role.
Please treat the below suggestion as what it is – our preferences.
We encourage you to experiment to find your setup.

Remember, just because something works for someone else, does not mean it has to and will work for you!

Why such loadout?

PRIMARY WEAPONS

Let’s start our loadout suggestion Goyo R6 Siege operator guide section by saying that both primary weapons available to Goyo are great choices.
Which one you pick should depend on the playstyle you prefer.

TCSG12
Therefore, if you are a type of player who likes to anchor, hold long angles, and is comfortable with semi-automatic guns, then try TCSG12.
Ubisoft lowered TCSG12 damage to 57.
Since this weapon operates as a DMR rather than a shotgun, we recommend trying it on with 2.0x scope. The recoil with magnification may be cumbersome to some, but once mastered, it is a powerful weapon.
Alternatively, you could try using TCSG12 with 1x sights if you are more of a holo player, but in such case perhaps you should try the other primary weapon available to Goyo, which is…

VECTOR.45
Vector.45 is a great option for players who would like to keep engagements in a close range, or are uncomfortable with the semi-automatic primary weapon.
Vector absolutely shreds in close-range. This SMG has amazing RPM and very manageable recoil.
We recommend equipping it with a compensator to lower the recoil – we find it works best with this high fire rate SMG.

SECONDARY WEAPONS

Goyo R6 Siege operator is not given any choices for secondary weapons.
Muzzle brake significantly improves the recoil of pistols, so it’s a great pick up for P229.

UNIVERSAL GADGETS

Both universal gadget options can come in handy. Therefore, you basically cannot go wrong here.
However, nitro cell offers a bit more advantage as it can be used to counter shield attackers or to deny plants.
Nitro can be pre-placed for remote activation of the Volcan shield, which adds an additional layer to area control for Goyo!

If your team has a sufficient amount of explosives, then pick a Proximity Alarm. It will help to cover your flanks.
